Remainder of French Polynesia (Moorea, Huahine, Tahaa and Bora-Bora)
(Return to the sailing adventures of La Boatique)
Cooks Bay, Moorea
Outrigger canoes are very popular in French Polynesia. I took these pictures during a race in Cooks Bay, Moorea.
Sue enjoying the view at Opunohu Bay, Moorea
Julie (from Cherokee) and I dinghied from Cooks Bay to Opunohu Bay and discovered some fantastic scenery.
On we sail from Moorea to Huahine. Cherokee is pictured.
These "traditional" Polynesian dancers in a remote village on the out island of Huahine were from California. They sure did fool me.
On July 19 we motored north between the barrier reef and the island of Huahine. The channel is very well marked.
These pink flowers are very common. The leaves and the flowers are often used in dance costumes. I took this picture while visiting Tahaa.
I enjoyed kayaking while in Raitea and Tahaa but some of the time I would rather have been windsurfing. The kayak inflates so it requires very little room to store while a windsurfer would require too much space.
These windsurfers sailed from Raitea to a motu off Tahaa where they had lunch. (A motu is a small island that makes up part of the coral reef surrounding the big island ) The windsurfers were on an organized trip from New Zealand. The power boats carried those who got tired along the way. The power boats also carried the food for the lunch. We enjoyed watching the windsurfers sail by La Boatique.
Dinner in Tahaa
Ken, Wendy, Julie and Barry enjoy dinner at Chez Louise in Tahaa. Pete gets a dance lesson from Brenda, Louise's daughter, while Barrette watches. Our dinner looked like shells and rice. It was tastey but took some effort to find the seafood within the shells.
The economy of Bora Bora seems to be based on honeymooners. We had a drink at the Bora Bora Hotel where we met Jim and Lynda Kosiur from Grand Rapids Michigan on their honeymoon. Jim and Lynda were married in Hawaii and came to Bora Bora for their honeymoon.
From a hilltop in Bora Bora we look west and contemplate many more days at sea.
