North from Florida along the East Coast
(Return to the sailing adventures of La Boatique)
This shrimp boat was on his way home from the Atlantic Ocean. The boat is approaching the St. Simons Inlet in Georgia. This inlet is very large. The Intercoastal Waterway runs right out to the ocean in the large gap between Jeykell Island and St. Simons Island. Lucky for us the wind and seas were calm.
Lighthouse on St. Simons Island, Georgia.
Haven anchored at Fort Frederica, Georgia. We lowered the dinghy here and Pete rowed to shore. The shoreline was a gooey black mud. Our shoes sunk in deep and the mud splattered on our pants as we crawled our way up the bank. During our visit to the fort we got a taste of what life might have been like for English settlers in the 1700's.
We saw an unbelieveable number of ospey nests along the ICW. This osprey decorated the nest with pine cones and spanish moss.
This wild horse lived on an island near Beaufort, North Carolina. We saw wild horses on desolate barier islands in Georgia and North Carolina.
Sue looks over the bow of Haven at Mile 28 of the Dismal Swamp.
High water along the Dismal Swamp eroded the banks. During the night a srong wind swayed the tree tops. A section of the bank gave way resulting in a huge tree falling across the chanel. The Army Core of Engineers brought the barge and crane. After hours of hard work they removed the tree so that the Dismal Swamp could be opened again to marine traffic.
The ducks seem to be watching the traditional skipjack and Haven docked in Cambridge, Maryland. The gas station was closed. Soon it will be torn down and replaced by expensive condos.
We shared Delaware Bay with many ocean bound ships. This ship is hauling containers. These boxes may look tiny in this picture but each one is the size of a railroad car or a semi-truck load. The containers are stacked six high on the stern of the ship.
A few hours before this picture was taken, Katie May and Haven were out in a storm on the Atlantic Ocean. Lucky for us, the storm system disolved soon after it reached the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The powerboat pictured is Katie May. The two boats pictured seem to be in the wilderness; however, just over the horizon is New York City. The picture was taken in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey.
This man is searching for clams in the shallow waters off Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey. The sail slowly moves the boat while he rakes the bottom of the bay.
